ERCP in South Delhi

ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography) combines endoscopy with X-ray to reach the bile and pancreatic ducts through the mouth. It is the standard treatment for bile-duct stones, blocked ducts causing jaundice, bile leaks and some pancreatic conditions — avoiding open surgery.

When ERCP is done

Bile-duct stones (with or after gallbladder surgery), jaundice from a blocked duct, cholangitis, bile leak after surgery, strictures of the bile duct, pancreatic duct stones or strictures in chronic pancreatitis, and placement of stents for tumours.

How it works

Under sedation or anaesthesia, a side-viewing endoscope reaches the duodenum. A fine catheter enters the bile duct; contrast dye and X-ray outline the ducts. Stones are removed with baskets or balloons; a small cut (sphincterotomy) widens the opening; stents relieve blockages.

After ERCP

Observation for a few hours to overnight. Mild pain is common; pancreatitis occurs in a small percentage and is usually mild. Antibiotics and preventive measures are used routinely.

Why experience matters

ERCP is technically demanding; cannulation success, appropriate use and complication prevention all depend on the endoscopist. Dr Paliwal has performed ERCP for two decades at tertiary hospitals.

Questions about ercp

Is ERCP a surgery?

No — it is an endoscopic procedure done through the mouth with no incisions, though it is done in a special X-ray-equipped room under sedation.

How long does ERCP take?

30–60 minutes, with a short hospital stay for observation.

Do I still need gallbladder surgery after ERCP?

If the stones came from the gallbladder, yes — usually within a few weeks — to prevent recurrence.
