The small intestine is out of reach of regular endoscopes. Capsule endoscopy solves this: you swallow a vitamin-sized capsule containing a camera that takes 50,000+ images as it travels through the gut, transmitted to a recorder you wear. When it is used
Bleeding or anaemia with normal endoscopy and colonoscopy, suspected small-bowel Crohn's disease, celiac disease not responding to diet, suspected small-bowel tumours or polyposis syndromes, and chronic unexplained diarrhoea or abdominal pain.
How it is done
After an overnight fast and a small preparation, you swallow the capsule with water and wear a small recorder for 8 hours. You can walk around and, after 2 hours, drink and eat lightly. The capsule passes naturally in the stool.
What it shows — and its limits
Ulcers, erosions, bleeding vessels, tumours and inflammation throughout the small bowel. It cannot take biopsies or treat; when lesions are found, balloon enteroscopy follows. A patency capsule is used first if narrowing is suspected.
